About Shermco Canada

Shermco Canada is a trusted provider of electrical testing, engineering, commissioning, maintenance, and power system services. We support utility, industrial, commercial, and infrastructure customers by helping improve the safety, reliability, and performance of critical electrical systems.

We are currently seeking an Electrical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our team in Regina or Saskatoon. This is a strong opportunity for an EIT who is interested in power systems, electrical field services, testing, commissioning, and practical engineering development.

Position Summary

The Electrical Engineer-in-Training will support engineering and field-service projects involving electrical power distribution systems, substations, switchgear, transformers, protective relays, grounding systems, electrical studies, and commissioning activities.

Working under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers and experienced technical staff, the successful candidate will assist with technical analysis, field data collection, testing support, project documentation, reporting, and customer deliverables.

This role is based in Saskatchewan and requires travel to customer sites and project locations. Travel may include day trips, overnight stays, extended field assignments, and occasional work outside Saskatchewan based on project and business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed electrical designs for industrial facilities, substations, utility infrastructure, and commercial power systems.
  • Prepare and review single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, cable schedules, panel schedules, grounding plans, and construction drawings.
  • Specify electrical equipment, including switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, motor control centers, protective devices, cables, raceways, and grounding systems.
  • Complete load, cable-sizing, voltage-drop, grounding, equipment-sizing, and other electrical design calculations.
  • Support power system studies, including short-circuit, equipment evaluation, protection coordination, load-flow, power quality, and arc-flash analysis.
  • Apply the Canadian Electrical Code, applicable CSA standards, applicable IEEE standards, client requirements, and established engineering practices.
  • Coordinate assigned work with clients, project managers, field-service teams, contractors, vendors, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Monitor assigned project activities against scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client expectations.
  • Respond to technical questions, requests for information, field changes, and construction related issues.
  • Conduct site visits to collect field information, verify existing conditions, and confirm design requirements.
  • Support construction, electrical equipment inspection, testing, commissioning, energization, and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with field teams to ensure designs are practical, safe, and constructible.
  • Occasionally work in the field under the direction of Field Services team on shut-down, startup and maintenance projects.
  • Follow Shermco and client health, safety, environmental, and site-access requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited or recognized engineering program.
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan, or eligible and willing to register as an EIT in Saskatchewan.
  • 4 - 6 years of overall experience in power systems, electrical distribution, substations, protection and control, electrical testing, commissioning, or field engineering.
  • Ability to work under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers and within applicable engineering practice requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documents.
  • Valid driver’s licence with the ability to travel approximately 10%, including overnight travel and work away from home when required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Exposure to AutoCAD, Bluebeam, electrical study software, or test reporting systems is considered an asset.
  • Previous co-op, internship, utility, industrial, consulting, construction, electrical services, or field experience is considered an asset.

Skills and Competencies

  • Safety-focused approach to all work.
  • Strong attention to detail when reviewing drawings, test data, reports, and technical documents.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and curiosity about how electrical systems operate in the field.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with internal teams, customers, and site personnel.
  • Willingness to learn from engineers, technologists, technicians, and field-service teams.
  • Comfortable working in both office and field environments.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage documentation and project details.
  • Professional judgment and willingness to work within the limits of training, supervision, and EIT status.

Travel and Working Conditions

This position requires approximately 10% travel based on project needs, customer requirements, training, and business demands. Travel may include field assignments throughout Saskatchewan, other Canadian provinces and the United States, overnight stays, extended assignments away from home, and occasional overtime, weekend work, shutdown support, or emergency response support.

Work may be performed in engineering offices, customer facilities, substations, industrial environments, utility sites, construction areas, and outdoor locations. The role may involve working around energized and de-energized electrical equipment, wearing required personal protective equipment, walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, kneeling, accessing field equipment, and working in varying weather conditions or industrial environments.
